As part of our ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, we undertook a meaningful project at Kataragama Dewalaya, one of Sri Lanka’s most revered and spiritually significant sacred sites. Kataragama is a place of deep devotion, respected by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and indigenous communities alike, symbolising unity, faith, and centuries-old tradition.
Project Overview
Kataragama Dewalaya is dedicated to God Kataragama (Skanda Murugan) and is renowned for its powerful spiritual energy and rich ritual heritage. Worship at this sacred site is deeply sensory, where fragrance plays a vital role in creating an atmosphere conducive to prayer, reflection, and devotion.
Our CSR initiative was designed to respectfully enhance this spiritual ambience while preserving the sanctity and traditions of the temple.
Our Contribution
As part of this project, we installed ambient scent diffuser machines at three key locations within the temple premises:
- Maha Dewalaya
- The Ancient Mud Shrine of God Kataragama
- Valli Amma Dewalaya
The fragrance selected for this initiative was sandalwood, a scent traditionally associated with purity, calmness, and spiritual grounding. Sandalwood has long been used in sacred rituals and is deeply connected to devotion and meditation.
Implementation Approach
Special care was taken throughout the project to ensure:
The fragrance remains subtle and non-intrusive
Religious practices and daily rituals are not disrupted
The historical and spiritual integrity of each sacred space is fully respected
The placement and intensity of each diffuser were carefully planned to harmonise with the natural flow of devotees and temple activities.
Impact on the Sacred Environment
The gentle presence of sandalwood enhances the spiritual experience of devotees, fostering a calm and meditative atmosphere across all three locations. The fragrance supports prayer and reflection, enriching the sacred environment without altering its traditional essence.
Our CSR Commitment
This project reflects our belief that impactful CSR initiatives should honour culture, faith, and heritage. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Kataragama Dewalaya and to support a sacred space that holds profound meaning for millions of devotees.
Through initiatives such as this, we remain committed to giving back with respect, purpose, and cultural sensitivity — ensuring that responsibility is expressed through reverence and care.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Basnayaka Nilame Thilina Madusanka and the dedicated team Kataragama Dewalaya for their guidance, cooperation, and trust throughout these CSR initiatives.
